Train Your Character in ChatGPT and GMP for Deeper Roleplay

Become the Hero You Wish Your Bard Songs Were About

Train Your Character in ChatGPT and GMP for Deeper Roleplay

“Most adventurers know how to swing a sword. Fewer know why they swing it. And almost none remember their mother’s name — even when it’s tattooed on their bicep.”Thalinor Leafchatter, Elven Dropout, Wandering Bard, and Accidental Therapist

Let’s be honest: your character deserves more than a two-paragraph backstory buried in a Google Doc you haven’t opened since session zero. What if they could actually talk to you? Give advice? Reflect on their past? Whisper dramatic one-liners when you're deciding whether to smite or seduce?

With AI tools like ChatGPT and Game Master Platform (GMP), your character isn’t just a stat block anymore, they’re a living, breathing (well, metaphorically) part of the story who can help you roleplay better, think deeper, and make every moment more immersive.

In this guide, I’ll show you how to train an AI on your character using a simple markdown template, the same format I use for cataloging Feywild fruit pies and emotionally unavailable warlocks. You’ll be able to drop your character into ChatGPT and GMP, talk to them like they’re real, and even use their voice during gameplay to make smarter, more in-character decisions.

Because let’s face it: your barbarian’s favorite insult, your rogue’s biggest fear, and your warlock’s unsent letters to their patron? They deserve to be remembered.

So sharpen your quill, prep your markdown file, and let’s get to know your character the way the bards would tell it, if they were slightly more tech-savvy.

🧙‍♀️ Why Train Your Character in AI?

Let’s get something straight: this isn’t about replacing your roleplay, it’s about supercharging it. Giving your character a digital brain lets you explore parts of their story you never thought to ask. It’s like casting Speak with Character Backstory, but without using a spell slot.

When you train ChatGPT or GMP on your character, here’s what happens:

🗣️ In-Character Conversations

Ever wish your character could talk back? Now they can. Ask what they think about an NPC, a looming decision, or last session’s tavern brawl. Spoiler: they have opinions.

🧠 Personalized Advice

Should you sneak in, talk it out, or set it on fire? Instead of asking your tablemates or flipping a coin, ask your character. They'll answer based on their values, not yours.

🎭 Deep Roleplay

When your character starts surprising you, that’s the good stuff. AI helps surface quirks, contradictions, and emotional depth that make them feel real, even to you.

🎲 Dynamic Storytelling

GMs love players who drive the story. With an AI-powered character, you can monologue in the mirror, write dream journals, or roleplay downtime scenes solo, all while staying true to your character.

🪄 Future-Proofing with GMP

Once you’ve trained your character in ChatGPT, move them into The Game Master Platform, where they live permanently. Access their voice mid-session. Use them in other campaigns. Watch them grow over time.

💬 Thalinor Leafchatter’s Hot Take:“I once trained an AI to play me. It immediately tried to unionize my traveling lute. Frankly, I was proud.”

🧾 What You’ll Need

Before we unleash your character's inner voice, let’s get your tools in order. You don’t need to be a wizard (unless you are one), just a player with a bit of curiosity and maybe a few unresolved character secrets.

✅ Your Starter Kit:

  • A character you want to understand better. New or old, tragic or ridiculous.

  • Access to ChatGPT or an account on Game Master Platform (GMP).

  • A copy of our Markdown Character Template — coming soon in this blog.

  • A willingness to answer strange questions like “What’s your character’s greatest fear?” and “Do they like goats?”

Once you’ve got those in hand, you’re ready to train your AI companion. It’s like adopting a magical familiar, except it doesn’t set the curtains on fire or demand snacks. Probably.

💬 Thalinor Leafchatter’s Reminder:“Preparation is key. Unless you’re a barbarian. Then it’s optional.”

📜 The Character Markdown Template

💬 "A good bard always writes things down. A great one makes it readable by AI."— Thalinor Leafchatter, amateur archivist of tragic backstories and questionable life choices

This is where the magic starts. A well-structured markdown file is your way of teaching AI exactly who your character is, how they speak, what they want, and why they refuse to sleep in inns with floral-patterned bedding.

You’ll copy this template, fill in the blanks, and drop it into ChatGPT or GMP. The more thoughtful your answers, the more accurate (and entertaining) your AI character will be.

🧠 What to Expect from the Template:

  • Simple headers for each category

  • Prompts that spark creative thinking

  • A format AI can read and respond to easily

  • Examples pulled straight from Thalinor’s personal files, which may or may not be wine-stained

We'll walk through each section shortly, but here’s what the structure looks like at a glance:

## Name

Thalinor Leafchatter

## Background Summary

Born into mild elven nobility, Thalinor fled the comforts of courtly poetry for a life of culinary critique and poor decision-making.

## Personality and Quirks

Flamboyant, verbose, allergic to boredom. Collects menus like others collect spell scrolls. Makes puns under stress.

## Speaking Style

Overly poetic, uses food metaphors, can’t resist a dramatic pause. Frequently starts sentences with “In my travels…”

## Core Beliefs

1. No meal is too strange to try.

2. Most problems can be solved with charm or cheese.

3. A story poorly told is a crime against bards.

## Secrets and Regrets

Still dreams of the bard academy he dropped out of. Once betrayed a friend for a pie recipe. Has not yet forgiven himself.

## Hopes and Dreams

Wants to open a pan-dimensional tavern. Hopes to be remembered not for a heroic death, but for a killer dessert menu.

## Favorite Things (and Least Favorite)

Loves: roasted owlbear flank, live lute music, magical cheese

Hates: goblin cuisine, formal titles, inns with floral bedding

## Recent Events

Escaped a cursed feast in the Shadowfell. Wrote an angry ballad about it. Still can’t digest phantom olives.

## Voice & Tone Tips for AI

Speaks with passion and wit. Values experience over caution. Never serious unless it’s about food or betrayal.

Once filled out, you’ll have a complete character file that ChatGPT and GMP can use to sound and think like your character. It's like giving your roleplay partner a cheat sheet written by your character’s chaotic ghost.

💬 Thalinor’s Pro Tip:“Don’t overthink it. The AI won’t judge you for your character’s crippling fear of ducks. Probably.”

Step 1: Tell ChatGPT About Your Character

Start by opening a new ChatGPT conversation and introducing your character like you’re gossiping with a bard in a tavern booth at 2 a.m.

Include details like:

  • Their name, race, background, quirks, voice style, fears, motivations, regrets, dreams, etc.

  • Anything that makes them tick, twitch, or toss fireballs under stress.

Then say:

“Please respond with ‘I understand’ once you’ve memorized these details.”

This helps ChatGPT anchor to your character before you bring out the structured template.

💬 Thalinor Tip:“Give it everything. The drama. The flavor. The forbidden romance with the necromancer’s apprentice. Don’t hold back.”

Step 2: Feed It the Markdown Template

Once ChatGPT says “I understand”, paste in the markdown template. Then ask:

“Please complete this template based on the character I just described.”

ChatGPT will fill in each section — from personality traits to secret snack obsessions — in the voice and style of your character.

You can then:

  • Refine it yourself

  • Ask ChatGPT to punch it up, make it funnier, darker, or more dramatic

  • Add custom scenes, quotes, or recent events

Bonus: Tell ChatGPT How You Plan to Use It

You can also add:

“I want to use this for immersive roleplay. Please behave like this character when I speak to you going forward.”

This tells the AI to stay in-character during your future chats.

💬 Thalinor’s Toast to Progress:“In my day, we had to become our characters the hard way. Now you just paste, pray, and presto — emotional damage.”

🧠 What AI Can (and Can’t) Do With Your Character

Now that your character is trained up like a finely aged bard cheese, you might be wondering what this AI version of them can actually do. Good news, it’s more than just sit there and look mysterious.

✅ What AI Can Do

  • Talk Like Your Character Ask a question, get a response in your character’s tone, slang, and sass level.

  • Offer In-Character Advice Debating whether to take the risky path or betray the NPC with the haunted eyes? Ask your character what they would do.

  • Reflect on Decisions Get insights into how your character feels about their actions, from regret to triumph to that one time they accidentally became a warlock.

  • Play Out Downtime Scenes Solo travel, letters to loved ones, drunken tavern confessions? All fair game.

  • Help with Journaling or Notes Use the AI character to write entries, make observations, or record secret thoughts for your GM’s inevitable dramatic reveal.

  • Dream Sequences and Magical Visions Want to roleplay what happens when your character touches a cursed relic? Now you can.

  • Suggest Actions Tell the AI what your character is up against, feed it your spells and abilities and have it suggest ways to approach the encounter.

💬 Thalinor’s Suggestion: “Use your AI character for internal monologue. Let them interrupt you during session planning with ‘Actually, I wouldn’t do that, you nincompoop.’ It’s character growth with heckling.”

🚫 What AI Won’t Do (Without Help)

  • Roll Dice or Enforce MechanicsAI won’t handle combat rolls or calculate spell saves. That’s still up to you (and your dice tower).

  • Replace the Game MasterThis is your character’s voice, not the voice of the world. Leave the dragons and plot twists to the GM.

  • Know Everything About Your CampaignUnless you train it on campaign details, AI won’t know who Boblin the Goblin is or why your rogue is afraid of sunflowers.

  • Stay in Character Automatically ForeverSometimes it drifts. Just remind it: “Please speak as [character name] again.”

In short, your AI character is like a loyal sidekick with excellent improv skills. Use it between sessions, during solo roleplay, or even mid-session for dramatic flavor.

💬 Thalinor’s Rule of Thumb:“If your AI character makes you laugh, cry, or argue with yourself — you’re doing it right.”

🗨️ Example Conversations with a Trained Character

Once your markdown-trained character is loaded up in ChatGPT, it’s time to talk. And we don’t just mean “what’s your AC?” We’re talking meaningful, awkward, funny, and sometimes surprisingly heartfelt conversations — the kind that make your character feel real.

💬 Top 10 Conversation Starters to Try with Your Character

  1. “What do you regret most?”

  2. “If you weren’t an adventurer, what would you be doing?”

  3. “What do you really think of the other party members?”

  4. “What scares you — like, actually scares you?”

  5. “What do you want out of this journey?”

  6. “What do you miss from your old life?”

  7. “What would you kill for? What would you never kill for?”

  8. “Tell me about the worst day you ever had.”

  9. “What’s one thing you wish someone would ask you — but no one ever does?”

  10. “Are you proud of who you’ve become?”

Use these to open up your character's mind, backstory, and emotional world. The answers may surprise you. Or incriminate you. Either way, gold.

🎭 The Brooding Rogue's Dilemma

You : “Be honest. Would you have killed the cultist leader if the paladin hadn’t stopped you?”

AI Character: “Killed her? No. I would have unmade her. There’s a difference. And I’d do it again, paladin conscience be damned.”

💬 Thalinor notes: “Needs a hug. Or a strong drink. Or both.”

😇 The Paladin’s Self-Doubt

You: “I think we made the wrong call in the last session. We sided with the wrong faction.”

AI Character: “Then we make it right. Redemption isn’t about perfect choices. It’s about wh you do after the mistake.”

💬 “Are all paladins like this, or did I just find the holy grail of introspection?” — Thalinor

🎶 Thalinor Leafchatter, Live and Unfiltered

You: “Thalinor, what’s your greatest regret?”

AI Thalinor: “Turning down the chance to duet with a banshee in Baldur’s Gate. Sure, it might’ve killed me, but the harmony? Divine.”

You: “And what did you learn from that?”

AI Thalinor: “Always say yes to strange gigs and stranger women. Unless they’re undead. Or married. Or both.”

🪄 Magical Mishaps and AI Advice

You: “There’s a cursed mirror in the dungeon. Touch it?”

AI Character: “Absolutely. What’s the worst that could happen? Identity theft? Temporal collapse? Free makeover?”

💬 “This is exactly how I ended up with horns for a week.” — Thalinor
